Every year, we have our “solar return”, which in modern day language means your birthday. It is when the sun is at the same degree and sign that it was in when you were born. When this happens, it is essentially a “yearly rebirth” in astrology terms, and it presents you with a new chart for your year ahead.
This new chart is representative of where you are now, so in other words, your current city you reside in. Some people will even travel to spend their birthday somewhere else so that they can get a better solar return chart based on that location. Personally, I don’t recommend cheating fate like that, but some people find great success by doing that.

What is the run-down like for a solar return chart reading?
A solar return chart reading will consist of me pulling up the chart for the year you recently went through, to see the energy that was at play and the theme it was presenting for you to fall into. I will then pull up the chart for the year you are heading into and see how the energy from the year before was setting you up for the year ahead. This creates flow and makes the next years chart speak to me with more clarity.
When is the best time to get a solar return chart reading?
Honestly, they can be helpful for whatever time. Many people get them done on or near their birthday as a gift to themselves and to start the next year with intention. Some people do them on the New Year or the real New Year (Spring Equinox). Others will get it done halfway through their year to understand what is unfolding in their life and how to navigate the energies. Others get it done nearing the end of their solar year as they may feel overwhelmed or guided by the coming energy of the next years chart.
What do you mean by a “new chart”?
Because most of the planets will be in a different position on your current birthday instead of where they were at your date and time of birth, this presents an entirely new chart. Your “sun sign” will remain the same, but it will be located in a different chart, hence suggesting a certain path you are taking this year. Because the planets have moved, they will be forming different aspects to each other which will be creating a new story/theme/energy for your year. They will also be in different houses which will determine which areas in your life it is likely to play out in.
Why is getting a solar return chart helpful?
So many people who have just entered the astrology realm can get very stuck on their natal birth chart, when really, there are so many things changing in a chart every year (including progressed planets). Then people get confused when their natal chart isn’t exactly reflecting their current year or what they are going through. This can help you to understand what exactly is at play right now in your life.
It can also be helpful for those who want guidance on where to place their energy for the next year in a way that flows with the energy, rather than against it. For example: You may be wondering if you should spend another year being a stay at home mom, or, going back into the work force. Your solar return chart may have a stellium in the 10th house of career and an empty 4th or 5th house — suggesting this could be the year to move back into work.
